Best Smartphone Astrophotography Apps

In this post, I have compiled a list of useful astronomy apps for your mobile phone or tablet. If you want to install more astronomy on your iPhone or Android Device (personally using the Samsung Galaxy S10), the following list of apps should be very helpful.

I reached out to the community of astrophotography and astronomy on twitter to find out which astronomy apps are the most popular. I was completely amazed to find out how many amazing star apps I had never heard of, which I now use and enjoy every day.

In particular, there were other useful weather forecasting apps that I did not use (such as Astrospheric) to help plan my backyard astrophotography sessions.

In some applications, such as Stellarium, seeing how many other people are using the app in the astrophotography community helped ensure its usefulness and usefulness by 2021.

For each mobile app on this list, I mentioned whether it was available in the Apple App Store or Google Play store. Some of these star apps are only available for one or the other.

I also included an app publisher, category, and app description to get an idea of what to expect before downloading it. I did not include the price of the app (because this may change), but I added whether it is free now or not.

Due to the emergence of mobile apps and the large number of new star apps appearing daily, I have not used all of these astronomy apps. Take this post as a threat to the most popular apps, with great reviews and ratings across the star community.

The purpose of this post is not to measure apps by comparison, but to provide a useful resource for amateur astronomers. I have included a brief description of each application from the author, and you can click the name of the app to get more details about each one.

Apart from the following, here is a list (in some order) of the best star apps for your iPhone or Android phone.

Stellarium

* Created by: Noctua Software

* Application: iPhone, Android

* Category: Planet

* Paid or Free: Free, Paid Pro Version

Description:

“Stellarium Mobile is a planetary app that shows exactly what you see when you look at the stars.

Point to the stars, constellations, planets, comets, satellites (like the ISS), and other deep objects in real time in the sky above you in just a few seconds, by pointing the phone in the sky.

This award-winning app has easy and user-friendly functionality, making it one of the best star applications for adults and kids who want to explore the night sky. ”

Stellarium is the most popular mobile app platform for mobile phones. I also enjoy desktop and web versions as I plan my moments to think about astrophotography at home.

Polar Scope Align Pro

* Created by: Dimitrios Kechagias

* Application: iPhone

* Category: Polar Alignment Tool, Resources

* Paid or Free: Free (In-app purchases)

Description:

"The Polar Scope Align will calculate the position of Polaris or σ Octantis in your Polar Scope reticle by your location (using your phone's GPS or location input), allowing for faster and more polar coordination.

It is one of the few most accurate programs at the grassroots level for setting up spacecraft (so expect results to be compatible only with specific software and not the simplest "location alignment" applications)."

I have good things with this polar alignment tool for equatorial telescope mountaineers.

SkySafari 6 Pro

* Created by: Simulation Curriculum Corp.

* Application: iPhone, Android

* Category: Planet, Education

* Paid or Free: Paid

Description:

“SkySafari 6 Pro will transform your astrological experience. It has the largest database of any astronomical app, covering everything the solar system has ever discovered, offers unparalleled accuracy, flawless telescope control, Augmented Reality (AR) mode, and offers the best under-star experience if you rely on it. ”

I downloaded SkySafari 5 Pro with plans to use it to work with my ASIair camera control device and telescope mount. I have to admit, I have set this task for a long time and I have not tried it.

Meteoblue

* Created by: meteoblue

* Application: iPhone, Android

“Meteoblue demonstrates high-quality weather forecasts combined with a beautiful, simple and easy-to-use design. Weather forecasts can be requested anywhere on Earth easily and freely. ”

I recently added a real-time meteoblue for the weather to help me better prepare for future astronomical observations. For all weather forecasting apps to work properly, you'll need to let the app know your location.

I enjoy this weather app more than traditional (like the weather network). Where this app really shines it has satellite imagery. You can watch to improve cloud patterns and movements. Highly recommended!

NightCap

* Created by: Realtime Dreams Limited

* Application: iPhone

* Category: Images

* Paid or Free: Paid

Description:

“The NightCap Camera is a powerful app that captures amazing low light and nighttime images, videos and 4K timing. Long exposure produces beautiful images in low light and different Astronomy techniques capture stars, Lights Lights (Aurora) and more! ”

Star Walk

* Created by: Vito Technology Inc.

* Application: iPhone, Android

* Category: Education

* Paid or Free: In-app purchases

Description:

“Star Walk is the best stargazing app you've ever seen on your mobile phone. It will be your guide to encountering the night sky, following all your movements in real time and allowing you to explore more than 200,000 highly detailed creatures. ”

SkyView Lite

* Created by: Terminal Eleven LLC

* Application: iPhone, Android

* Category: Planet, Education

* Paid or Free: Free. In-app purchases

Description:

“SkyView® Lite brings stars to everyone! Just point your iPhone, iPad, or iPod in the sky to see stars, stars, satellites, and more. ”

I recently installed this astronomy app on my Android phone, and the first thing that impressed me was augmented reality work. Instead of placing a screen overlay on the screen, SkyView puts a more flexible overlay on your phone's camera view, and I have to say, it's really good.

The introduction of stellar contexts and descriptions is well done. Expect the “Lite” version (free) of the app to deliver messages about frequent upgrades.
